Our Eames rocking chair blue replica pairs a soft, pastel shell with solid maple rockers and a polished chrome wire base. It is the RAR rocker in its gentlest colour: calm enough for a nursery, light enough to carry from room to room, and shaped for long, unhurried sitting.
The armrests are moulded into the shell, so your elbows have somewhere to rest while you read, feed a baby or simply watch the garden. The rockers do the rest, with a slow, quiet sway.
Rocking chair Eames replica: shell, rockers and base
The shell is injection-moulded polypropylene in light blue, with a UV-stable finish that helps it keep its pastel tone. It curves up into a high back and down into a deep seat pocket, which holds you comfortably without cushions. Because the arms flow straight out of the shell, there are no joints or seams to catch crumbs or trap dirt.
Beneath the seat, a polished chrome wire base, the Eiffel pattern of crossed rods, carries the shell on two solid maple rockers. The maple is sanded smooth and left pale, so it glides quietly and gives a warm contrast to the blue above it.
The whole chair weighs about 7 kg. You can lift it with one hand and move it to wherever the light is best that afternoon.
The RAR rocking chair: a design for new parents
Charles and Ray Eames began work on their moulded armchair around 1948, for a New York museum competition calling for low-cost furniture. They first planned it in stamped metal with a rubber coating. By the time it went into production in 1950, the shell was being formed in fibreglass-reinforced plastic, sold in bright colours and on a choice of bases.
One of those bases was the rocker, and the model code RAR simply means Rocking Armchair Rod. It was advertised for reading, relaxing and young mothers, and for years its manufacturer gave one to employees who had just become parents. The rocking base was withdrawn in 1968 and returned in 2001, now with a polypropylene shell like ours.
You can read more about the designers on our Charles and Ray Eames page and in our guide to what makes an Eames chair.
Why choose light blue
Light blue is the colour we suggest when you want the RAR to feel restful rather than loud. It sits naturally against white or pale grey walls, light oak or birch floors, and the linen and wool textures common in Scandinavian and Dutch homes.
In a nursery it reads as calm rather than babyish, so the chair still looks right when the room becomes a reading corner a few years later. The pale maple and bright chrome keep the pastel crisp, and it shows everyday marks far less than a white shell.
If you prefer something more graphic, the same chair comes in black with maple rockers.

Looking after the shell, maple and chrome
Wipe the shell with a damp cloth and a drop of mild washing-up liquid, then dry it. Milk, baby food and felt-tip usually lift straight off polypropylene if you deal with them the same day.
Dust the maple rockers with a dry cloth and keep them away from standing water. A microfibre cloth brings the chrome back to a shine, and it is worth checking the fixings between base and rockers every few months.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is this rocking chair a good choice for a nursery?
Yes, that is what the design was first marketed for. The moulded armrests support your elbows while feeding, the shell wipes clean in seconds, and the maple rockers move quietly. At about 7 kg it is easy to reposition. As with any rocking chair, keep small children from climbing on it or rocking it unsupervised, since a rocker can tip or pinch little fingers.
Will the light blue shell fade?
The shell has a UV-stable finish, which helps it hold its pastel colour far better than untreated plastic. No coloured plastic is completely immune to years of strong direct sun, though. If the chair will sit by a south-facing window, a blind during the brightest hours keeps the blue even across the seat and back.
What does RAR mean on an Eames rar rocking chair replica?
RAR stands for Rocking Armchair Rod, the model code given when the design went into production in 1950. “Rocking” refers to the maple runners, “armchair” to the shell with built-in arms, and “rod” to the wire base. Other bases in the same family used different codes, such as DAR for the dining-height version on the same wire base.
How much assembly does the chair need?
Very little. The wire base attaches to the underside of the shell and the maple rockers fix to the base, which takes a few minutes. Step-by-step instructions are in the Assembly and Setup tab on this page. After the first few weeks of use, check the fixings once and tighten them if needed.
Will the maple rockers mark my floor?
On rugs and carpet, no. On polished wood, tiles or vinyl, any rocking chair can leave faint lines over time as grit gets trapped beneath the runners. Thin self-adhesive felt strips along the underside of each rocker prevent this, and they also soften the sound on hard floors. Keep the floor swept where the chair rocks.
