Replica or licensed chair: what you are buying

A replica copies the look of a famous design. A different company makes it. Our chair follows the 1956 Eames design. It is not made or licensed by Vitra, Herman Miller or the Eames family.

• Setting it up. It comes flat-packed with the tools you need. Most people finish in 20 to 30 minutes. Two people make it easier.
• Materials. Italian aniline leather, a shell of layered wood veneer and a polished aluminium base.

Italian leather or made in Italy? What the label means

Many people search for an Eames lounge chair made in Italy. Online, two different claims often get mixed up.

Italian leather means the hide was tanned in Italy.
Made in Italy means the whole chair was built there. One does not mean the other.

Our cushions are covered in Italian aniline leather. We do not sell the chair as made in Italy. So when a shop talks about "Italian quality", ask one simple question. Which part is Italian: the leather, or the whole chair?

Italy does have a real link to this chair. For some years it was also made under licence by a company in Milan. And Milan has hosted the Salone del Mobile, one of the world's biggest furniture fairs, since 1961.

Living with aniline leather in a sunny room

Aniline leather has no painted layer on top. That is why it feels soft and shows the natural grain. It also means light, heat and spills affect it more. A few easy habits help.

• Watch the sun. Strong direct sun can fade the leather over time. Keep the chair out of the afternoon sun, or close a curtain or shutter at the brightest time of day.
• Keep it away from heat. A radiator or fireplace right next to the chair can dry the leather out.
• Blot spills fast. The leather soaks up liquid quickly. Dab it with a dry cloth straight away. Do not rub.
• Expect it to change. The leather slowly darkens and softens with use. This is called a patina. Most owners love it.

Your set arrives flat-packed in boxes. Some pieces are large. It helps to have a second person at home on delivery day, and again when you build it.
