What you are buying: a replica, said plainly
A replica is a new chair made in the shape of a famous design. Another company builds it. Ours follows the 1929 design by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich. It is not the licensed chair, and we never say it is.
Buy it to sit in and enjoy every day. It is not a collector's piece. So do not buy it to sell later at a profit.
A note on the law
Design law is not the same in every European country. We do not give legal advice about Germany on this page. Please read our legal disclaimer to see how we describe and sell replica furniture.
The German Pavilion Barcelona chair: why the story is German
The name says Spain. The chair was made for Germany.
In 1929, Barcelona held an International Exposition. Many countries built a hall there. Germany asked the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to design its hall, the German Pavilion. Mies was born in Aachen in 1886. He made the furniture with Lilly Reich, a German designer. Many shops leave her name out.
The Spanish king and queen were due to open the German part of the fair. So the chair had to feel grand, almost like a throne. Only two were made for the Pavilion.
The story then came back to Germany. In the early 1930s, a metal workshop in Berlin made the first chairs for sale to the public. The name "Barcelona chair" came much later.
Is the Barcelona chair a Bauhaus design?
Many German shops sell it as a Bauhaus classic. That is only half true.
Mies ran the Bauhaus design school from 1930 until it closed in 1933. The chair came a year before he took over. So the school did not design it. The real link is Mies himself, and the simple, modern way of thinking he took with him.
Chair only, or Barcelona chair and ottoman?
The ottoman is the low, matching footstool. In German it is often called a Hocker. We sell the chair both ways, and both ship free to Germany.
- The chair only suits a reading corner, a home office or a hallway. It also works as a pair facing a sofa. Most of our customers choose the chair on its own.
- The chair and ottoman let you put your feet up. The ottoman is also a spare seat when guests come.
Need somewhere to rest a cup or a book? Our adjustable side table in the Eileen Gray style is small enough to stand right next to the chair.

Three checks before you buy any Barcelona chair
Replica shops in Germany sell very different chairs under the same name. These three checks help you compare.
- Leder or Kunstleder? Leder is real leather. Kunstleder is faux leather, a plastic-based material. Some shops list both under one name, so read the material line. Our Barcelona chairs are covered in leather.
- Seat height. Replicas are not all the same size. A higher seat changes how the chair feels and looks. Every Sederica product page lists the full measurements, so you can check before you order.
- Your floor. The steel frame rests straight on the floor. On wooden or tiled floors, stick small felt pads under the feet to stop scratches.
Our Barcelona chair style at a glance
The frame is polished stainless steel. Two curved bars cross under the seat. That gives the chair its famous X shape from the side.
The seat and back cushions are leather with button tufting. Tufting means the leather is pulled in at small points to make a pattern of squares. You can choose from several colours, from black and white to tan.
