Our Eames lounge chair and ottoman rosewood set pairs soft black aniline leather with a light rosewood veneer shell and a chunky aluminium elephant base. It is a replica of the 1956 lounge chair, made for reading and resting in a living room or study. The matching ottoman comes in the same leather and wood. What sets it apart from our other black and rosewood sets is the base, with broad, solid legs and a vintage look.
Key features
- Elephant base with 360-degree swivel. Turn to face the window or the room without getting up.
- Black Italian aniline leather. Soft from day one, and it ages well with use.
- Light rosewood veneer on both sides. The back of the shell looks finished when the chair stands in the middle of a room.
- 7-layer laminated shells. They resist cracking and warping, which matters in a chair you plan to keep.
- Hand-sewn cushions, welted and piped. Clean, defined edges on every cushion.
- Shock-mounted shells. A deep, easy recline when you lean back.
- Matching ottoman included. Same leather and rosewood, so the set arrives complete.
Why choose the elephant base Eames lounge chair and ottoman rosewood set?
The base is the main reason to pick this version. Elephant base is the name used in the replica trade for the chunkier style of cast aluminium base, styled after the vintage 1956 chairs. Its legs look broad and solid under the shell.
Warm brown rosewood with dark grain lines sits well against black leather, and the chunky base adds to that vintage feel. Choose this set if you want an Eames lounge chair elephant base that looks like it came from the 1950s, not from a modern showroom.
Materials: leather, veneer and cushions
The cushions are covered in soft Italian aniline leather in black. Aniline leather is dyed through and has no heavy surface coating, so you feel the hide itself. It marks more easily than coated leather, and that wear is part of how it ages.
Each shell is made from 7 layers of laminated veneer, finished in light rosewood on both sides. The hand-sewn cushions sit on shock-mounted shells, which give this black leather Eames lounge chair its deep, easy recline. In many European shops you will also see rosewood called palisander.
Design background
Charles and Ray Eames introduced the lounge chair and ottoman in 1956. The 1956 example at the Museum of Modern Art in New York lists moulded rosewood, plywood, leather and cast aluminium among its materials, the same pairing this set follows. Our history of the Eames lounge chair tells the full story.

Is this set right for you?
It is a good fit if:
- you want black leather on rosewood with a vintage-style base
- the chair will stand away from the wall, where the finished back of the shell is on show
- you have room for the full set: at least 1.5 m front to back, plus leg room between chair and ottoman
Consider another version if:
- you want a bright, mirror-like base. Our black and light rosewood set with chrome base has one.
- you prefer an all-dark chair. Try black leather with ebony ash.
- the chair will sit in strong sun or near pets that scratch. Aniline leather shows marks and can fade in direct light.
How it compares with our other rosewood sets

Care
- Dust the leather with a soft, dry cloth.
- Blot spills straight away. Do not rub them in.
- Keep the chair out of strong direct sun and away from radiators, which dry out and fade aniline leather.
- Wipe the rosewood veneer and the base with a barely damp cloth, then dry them. Skip household sprays and silicone polish.
Questions about the elephant base set
Is the elephant base set bigger or heavier than the chrome base version?
No. On both sets the chair measures 87 × 87 × 82 cm and weighs 24 kg, and the ottoman measures 65 × 54 × 54 cm. Only the look of the base changes.
Does the ottoman have an elephant base too?
Yes, it stands on a matching base of its own, with four legs instead of the chair’s five.
Will my rosewood shells match the photos exactly?
Not line for line. Every veneer sheet has its own grain, so your shells will have their own pattern within the same light rosewood tone. Our Legal Disclaimer notes that colours can vary slightly.
Can I use this chair at a desk?
We would not recommend it. The shock-mounted shells are set for leaning back, so the chair does not hold you upright at a table. For desk work, see our Eames-style office chairs.
Is this chair made by the company that first produced the 1956 design?
No. It is a replica sold by Sederica, inspired by the lounge chair Charles and Ray Eames designed in 1956. We have no link to the designers’ estate or to any other maker. Read more in our guide to whether Eames replicas are legal in Europe.
Sederica sells reproductions inspired by mid-century designs. See our Legal Disclaimer for terms.
