Sederica’s Eames white rocking chair is the RAR at its most architectural. A crisp white shell, pale maple runners and a web of polished chrome between them: nothing competes for attention, so the curve of the seat carries the whole design.
It works as a nursing chair, a reading seat or a single sculptural piece in a living room. The arms are part of the shell, the rockers move with a slow, even sway, and the whole chair is light enough to follow the sun around the house.
White Eames rocking chair: what it is made of
The shell is injection-moulded polypropylene in a clean, bright white. Its UV-stable finish helps it resist the fading and yellowing that strong daylight causes in untreated white plastic, which matters if the chair will sit near a large window.
One continuous moulding forms the arms, back and seat. The back rises high enough to support your shoulders, and the seat drops into a deep pocket that keeps you settled while you rock, with no cushion needed.
Underneath, polished chrome rods cross in the Eiffel pattern and meet two solid maple rockers. The maple is sanded smooth and kept light, so it glides quietly and warms the white and silver above it. The finished chair weighs about 7 kg.
RAR rocking chair: how the Eames rocker came about
When Charles and Ray Eames launched their moulded plastic shell in 1950, it came with a set of interchangeable bases rather than a single fixed frame. The crossed wire version soon earned the nickname Eiffel, for its likeness to the Paris tower.
The rocker took that same shell and wire base and set them on two curved wooden runners, first made in birch or walnut. Early examples are now held in museum collections, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
Our replica follows that form with maple runners and a polypropylene shell. Read more about the designers on our Charles and Ray Eames page and in our biography of Charles and Ray Eames.
Why choose the white RAR
White is the colour that lets the shape speak. Against a timber-clad wall, a sage or terracotta paint, or dark floorboards, the white shell reads almost like a sculpture.
In an all-white room it can fade into the background, which some people want and others don’t. If your walls are white, a rug in a darker tone beneath the rockers gives the chair an outline.
We would be honest about the trade-off: a white shell shows ink, crayon and dark spills sooner than the light blue version or the black one. It also cleans up faster than most people expect.
Size, weight and setting up
- Chair: 60 × 62 × 80 cm (W × D × H)
- Weight: about 7 kg
- White polypropylene shell, solid maple rockers, polished chrome base
- Minor assembly: base and rockers fix on in minutes
- Ships from our EU warehouse, 2-year warranty
| Feature | Measurement |
|---|---|
| Overall Height | 80 cm |
| Overall Width | 62 cm |
| Overall Depth | 60 cm |

The chair takes up little more floor than a dining chair when still. Allow extra depth for the runners to travel as it rocks, particularly if it sits beside a bookcase or a cot.
Keeping a white shell white
Give the shell a weekly wipe with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, then dry it. For stubborn felt-tip or biro, a cloth dampened with a little rubbing alcohol usually works; test it on the underside first.
Skip bleach, scouring pads and abrasive cream cleaners, which dull the surface and make it pick up dirt faster. New dark denim can transfer dye onto pale plastic, so a quick wipe after long sitting sessions keeps the seat even. Dust the maple dry and polish the chrome with a microfibre cloth.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Will the white shell turn yellow over time?
It is far less likely than with untreated plastic. The shell has a UV-stable finish designed to resist fading and yellowing in bright rooms. Years of strong, direct sun can still affect any white plastic, so if the chair sits in a south-facing window, a blind or sheer curtain during the brightest hours keeps the white even across the whole shell.
How do I remove marks from the white eames rar rocking chair?
Most everyday marks come off with warm water and a drop of mild soap on a soft cloth. For ink, felt-tip or crayon, a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth usually lifts it; try it on the underside first. Avoid bleach, scouring pads and abrasive creams, because they scratch the surface and make future marks harder to clean.
Is the chair comfortable without a cushion?
Yes, for most people. The high back supports your shoulders and the deep seat pocket holds you in place while you rock, so the shell is comfortable bare for reading or feeding. If you plan to sit for long evenings, a thin seat pad or a sheepskin softens it further and adds a layer of texture against the white.
Can I use this rocker at a desk or dining table?
We would not recommend it. The runners are designed to move, the seat sits low, and rocking at a table quickly becomes tiring. For dining or desk work, a fixed-base shell chair is the better choice; see our Eames style dining chairs. Keep the RAR for reading corners, nurseries and living rooms.
Will it fit in a small room or a nursery?
Usually, yes. The chair is 60 cm wide and 62 cm deep, so it fits beside a cot or in a corner of a compact living room. The one thing to plan for is rocking space: leave extra clearance behind the chair and in front of your feet so the runners never reach a wall, a radiator or furniture.
