This is our rosewood Eames lounge chair sold on its own, without the ottoman. Black aniline leather sits on a shell of light rosewood veneer, carried on a polished five-star aluminium base that turns a full 360 degrees.
We offer the chair alone for people who need one piece and not two. That might be a second seat beside a set you already own, or a reading corner with no room for a footstool. It might also be a first piece now, with the ottoman left for later. It is a replica, made by us and inspired by the 1956 design by Charles and Ray Eames.
Eames lounge chair without ottoman: what you get
- The chair, and only the chair. The box holds the lounge chair alone. The ottoman is available as a separate add-on, so you pay only for the piece you will use.
- Black aniline leather. Aniline leather leaves the natural surface of the hide open. It feels soft and warm from day one, and slowly forms creases where you sit most.
- Light rosewood veneer inside and out. Both faces of each shell are veneered. The back looks finished, which matters if the chair stands in open floor rather than against a wall.
- 7-layer laminated shells. Seven bonded layers give the curved shells their strength and help them resist cracking and warping.
- Shock-mounted shells. The seat and back shells are joined through shock mounts rather than rigid brackets. They take up a little movement as you lean back, so the chair feels relaxed rather than stiff.
- Polished aluminium swivel base. Turn towards a guest or the window without lifting a 24 kg chair.
Eames lounge chair light rosewood: a paler take on a classic wood
Light rosewood is lighter and more golden than the deep red-brown most people link with this chair. Dark streaks still run through the grain, but the shell reads as honey-brown rather than russet. Against black leather, that gives a crisp contrast without the visual weight of a darker shell.
In much of continental Europe, this tone is sold as light palisander. Because every shell is faced in real veneer, the figure on your chair will differ a little from our photos.
Light rosewood sits well with pale oak, beech or birch floors, white or warm grey walls, and linen or wool textiles. If your room is already dark and you want a deeper wood, our black and natural rosewood chair with ottoman is the better match.
Single Eames lounge chair, rosewood shell: who buys it on its own
You want to complete a pair. Many customers already own a lounge chair and ottoman and want a second chair facing it. Two chairs either side of a fireplace or a low table rarely need two footrests.
Your room is small. On its own, the chair takes an 87 × 87 cm footprint. Laid out with an ottoman, the set needs about 1.7 m from the back of the chair to the front of the footrest. In a city flat, that difference often decides whether the chair fits at all.
You read sitting up. Some people prefer their feet on the floor, with a book or a laptop on their knees. For that habit, the ottoman adds little.
You already have a footstool. A pouf, a bench or a low leather stool can sit in front of the chair instead.
You would rather buy in two steps. Take the chair now and add the ottoman later, once you have lived with the chair in your room.
When the chair alone may not suit you
The shells sit at a fixed recline, and there is no lever to change it. Without a footrest, your feet stay on the floor. The posture feels like a deep armchair rather than a full lounging position. If you want to put your legs up for an afternoon nap, choose a set such as our black and light rosewood chair and ottoman on a chrome base.
The seat is low, at 42 cm. Some people find it harder to get up from than a standard armchair, so try a low seat you already know before ordering.
It is not built for desk work. For long hours at a table, our Eames-style office chairs are the right choice.
If you plan to add the ottoman later, the veneer on a later piece will come from a different sheet. Its tone will sit in the same range, but the grain pattern will not mirror your chair.
The 1956 rosewood Eames lounge chair, and why the chair works on its own
The chair and its footrest were given separate model numbers, 670 and 671, when they were released in 1956, and the pair first appeared on an NBC television programme that same year. They were designed together, but they were always two pieces. That is why the chair alone still looks complete.
Charles and Ray Eames took the idea of a traditional club chair and rebuilt it in moulded plywood and leather. Charles Eames said he wanted the chair to have the warm, relaxed look of a well-used baseball glove. Black aniline leather that creases with use is close to that idea.
Our Eames lounge chair replica follows the 1956 form. Learn more about the designers on our Charles and Ray Eames page, read our history of the lounge chair, or see a short summary on Wikipedia.

Eames lounge chair black leather: living with it
Black is the most forgiving leather colour we offer. Small marks and the first creases on the seat blend into the dark surface, while the light rosewood shell keeps the chair from looking heavy.
A few habits keep it looking right:
- Once a week, run a soft dry cloth over the leather, paying attention to the welts and piping, where dust settles.
- For a mark, use a cloth barely damp with plain water, then dry the area. Avoid household cleaners, alcohol wipes and baby wipes.
- When the leather starts to feel dry, apply a cream made for aniline leather. Test it first on a hidden area.
- Wipe the veneer with a well-wrung, slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away. Skip silicone furniture sprays.
- Every few weeks, use the swivel to turn the chair a little. Daylight then falls evenly on the shell and leather, so one side does not fade faster than the other.
- Keep the chair out of the direct airflow of heaters and air-conditioning vents.

Questions about the chair-only version
Does this Eames lounge chair come with an ottoman?
No. This listing is for the lounge chair only. The matching ottoman is available as a separate add-on. If you want both from the start, our chair and ottoman sets are listed in the same collection.
Can I add the ottoman later, and will it match?
Yes, you can add it later. The leather and base will match. The veneer is real wood, so a later ottoman will have its own grain pattern, in the same light rosewood tone range.
Is the lounge chair comfortable without the ottoman?
Yes, as a deep armchair. The fixed recline and soft cushions make it comfortable for reading or conversation with your feet on the floor. If you want to lie back with your legs raised, an ottoman or another footrest makes a clear difference.
What is the difference between light rosewood and natural rosewood?
Light rosewood is paler and more golden, with dark streaks through the grain. Natural rosewood is deeper and redder. Light rosewood suits brighter rooms with pale floors. Natural rosewood suits warmer, darker interiors.
How much space does the chair need on its own?
The chair measures 87 cm wide and 87 cm deep. Leave a little extra room around it so the swivel turns freely and your feet have space in front. A set with an ottoman needs about 1.7 m of length.
