The Le Corbusier LC4 chaise longue replica in black is our reproduction of the reclining chair that Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand designed in 1928, a piece often described as a machine for resting. A long leather cradle rides on a polished chrome bow, and you set the angle by sliding it along a matt black base. Black leather against bright chrome gives the sharpest contrast in our LC4 range.

How Our LC4 Chaise Lounge Is Built

The cradle is upholstered in full-grain Italian leather in black, laid over high-density foam that keeps its shape rather than sagging into a dip after a few months. At the head end, a padded bolster supports your neck in every position.

Beneath the leather, a single length of chrome-finish steel tube is bent into a continuous curve. That bow is the chair’s spine. It follows the line of a reclining body from the back of the knees to the shoulders, and it is also the surface that glides over the base when you change the angle.

The base is powder-coated steel in matt black. Most of the chair’s 22 kg sits low in this base, which is why the LC4 feels planted on the floor instead of top-heavy.

Le Corbusier Chaise Longue: Where the Design Comes From

The chaise was developed at Le Corbusier’s studio on Rue de Sèvres in Paris and first shown at the 1929 Salon d’Automne, as part of a display of modern interior equipment. Its central idea is simple. The body-shaped cradle and its support are two separate parts, so gravity and friction hold whatever angle you choose. No levers, no springs. The best-known image of it shows Charlotte Perriand reclining on the chair with her face turned away from the camera. That photograph is still the clearest explanation of what the chair was designed to do. You can read more about the architect on our Le Corbusier designer page, or through the Fondation Le Corbusier in Paris.

Why Choose the LC4 Chaise Lounge in Black?

Black turns the chair into something close to a line drawing. Against white, pale grey or concrete walls, the silhouette stays crisp from across the room, and the chrome reads as a bright outline around a dark shape. It suits monochrome interiors, Bauhaus-leaning apartments, light oak floors and industrial lofts. Black leather also hides everyday marks better than lighter hides, which matters on a piece that gets used daily.

If your room leans warm, with walnut, terracotta or brass, our LC4 in chocolate brown sits more quietly. We find black the easier LC4 to place in a room that already has plenty going on.

Sizing and Room Planning

The chaise measures 163 × 60 × 57 cm overall. At 60 cm wide, it is narrower than a typical armchair and footstool pairing. That makes it a good fit alongside a window, bookcase or bedroom wall where two pieces would crowd the space.

We suggest allowing a clear strip of about two metres in length. That leaves room to walk past the foot end and to slide the cradle when you change position. Because the cradle simply sits onto the base, you can lift the chair in two pieces when rearranging a room.

Recline Positions and Everyday Use

Push the cradle forward and you sit fairly upright, which works for reading or talking with guests. A middle setting suits music, films or a slow Sunday coffee. Slide it fully back and your legs rise above your hips, a position many owners use for a short afternoon rest.

The angle is set by moving the cradle, and this is easiest while standing beside the chair. It then stays put under your weight. There is no locking mechanism, and the chair does not rock or swivel. If you want to change position often without getting up, a mechanical recliner will suit you better. If you settle into one favourite angle, the LC4’s simplicity is the point.

Caring for Black Leather and Chrome

Wipe the leather with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and apply a neutral leather conditioner every six months to keep it supple. Black leather absorbs heat, so avoid placing the chair right against radiators or in strong midday sun, which can dull the surface over time. Polish the chrome with a dry microfibre cloth and skip abrasive cleaners. The powder-coated base only needs a damp wipe.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is this an original LC4 chaise longue?

No. This is a Le Corbusier LC4 reproduction made to the proportions and materials of the 1928 design: a leather cradle, a chrome steel bow and a separate steel base. It is not made by, or licensed from, the original design holders. What you get is the same reclining geometry and the same two-part construction at a far more accessible level, with our 2-year warranty behind it.

How do I change the recline angle?

Stand beside the chair and slide the cradle along the base, forward for a more upright seat or back to recline. The chrome bow glides over the base supports and stays wherever you stop it, held by your weight and friction. There are no levers or locks to adjust, so there is nothing mechanical to wear out. Most people find two or three favourite positions within a day or two.

How much floor space does the LC4 chaise lounge need?

The chair itself is 163 cm long and 60 cm wide. In practice, plan for around two metres of length so you can walk past the foot end and shift the cradle freely. The narrow width is its advantage: it fits along a wall, under a window or in a bedroom corner where an armchair and ottoman would take up noticeably more room.

Should I choose black or chocolate brown?

Pick black if your room is cool-toned or monochrome, with white, grey, concrete or light oak. The contrast with the chrome is strongest in black, and it hides everyday marks well. Chocolate brown is the better match for warm interiors with walnut, cognac leather or earthy textiles. Both share the same frame, base and dimensions, so the decision comes down to colour alone.

How do I look after the black leather?

Dust it regularly and wipe it with a slightly damp cloth when needed. Every six months, apply a neutral, colourless leather conditioner to keep the hide soft and help prevent surface cracking. Keep the chair a little away from radiators and direct sun, since black leather heats quickly and can lose its depth over time. Blot spills straight away rather than rubbing them.
