Our Eames lounge chair replica white combines soft white Italian aniline leather, a natural American walnut veneer shell and a polished chrome 5-star base, and the matching ottoman comes with it. Of the three white lounge chairs we sell, this is the one with the warmest wood and the brightest metal.

Choose it if you want a light chair that still looks warm in the room. It is a Sederica reproduction inspired by the 1956 lounge chair and ottoman by Charles and Ray Eames, made to the same proportions and sold under our own name.

White leather, walnut and chrome: what each part does to the look

Three materials, three tones. The white cushions are the brightest surface on the chair, so they are what people notice first. The walnut shell wraps them in a band of mid to dark brown, and its figured grain gives the white a clear outline from every angle.

Many white versions of this design pair the leather with a bleached or white-pigmented shell, so the whole chair turns pale. We kept our walnut in its natural colour. The result is a mid-century white chair with more contrast and more warmth, which helps in rooms where almost everything is already light.

The base finishes the job. Modern chrome reflects the floor and the light around it, so the lower half of the chair looks lighter than its 24 kg would suggest. It also ties in with metal already in the room: a tubular side table, an arc lamp, steel fittings in an open-plan kitchen.

If you love the white leather but walnut feels too warm for your room, the ash version is the quieter choice. If you want the most striking outline, rosewood gives it.

How our white replica is built

  • White Italian aniline leather. The leather is dyed through and left without a thick pigment coating, so it feels soft from the first day and the natural grain stays visible. It is also less sealed than coated leather, which is why the care advice below matters on a white chair.
  • Hand-sewn, welted and piped cushions. The piping reinforces every seam edge. Seams are where a lounge chair wears first and where dirt gathers on pale leather, so a firm, clean edge keeps the cushions looking tidy for longer.
  • 7-layer laminated walnut shell. Thin plies pressed together hold the curve of each shell and resist cracking and warping over time. The American walnut veneer covers both faces, so the back of the chair is as finished as the front.
  • Shock-mounted shells. The mounts between seat and back let the backrest give a little as you lean into it. That small movement is what makes the recline feel deep rather than stiff.
  • Polished chrome 5-star base. It swivels through a full 360 degrees, so you can turn from the window to the room without lifting or dragging the chair.
  • Matching ottoman. It uses the same white leather and walnut veneer as the chair, so both pieces age together and read as one set.

Design heritage: the 1956 lounge chair and ottoman

Charles and Ray Eames presented the lounge chair and ottoman in 1956, introducing it to American viewers on the television programme Home, hosted by Arlene Francis. Charles described the idea as a modern answer to the old English club chair: deep and padded for long sitting, but lighter in form.

The construction was surprisingly simple for such a comfortable chair. Moulded plywood shells carry the leather cushions, and the whole chair turns on a swivel base. The couple’s own description, kept by the Eames Office, said it was made for reading, conversation after dinner, or simply sitting and thinking.

Our chair follows that layout and that reclined posture. It is a replica made for Sederica, with no connection to the Eames Office or the licensed manufacturers. For the full timeline, read when the Eames lounge chair was designed.

Eames lounge chair white walnut: the rooms it suits

White walls and light oak floors. This is where the walnut earns its place. A white Eames lounge chair replica can disappear in an all-white room, but the walnut shell draws a line around it and keeps it visible.

Grey, concrete and black steel. The chrome base picks up the metal, while the walnut stops the corner from feeling cold. It sits well in loft-style flats and city apartments.

Dark floors. On smoked oak or dark tiles the white cushions stand out strongly, but from a distance the walnut can merge with the floor. A light wool rug underneath brings the outline back.

Warm schemes with brass. Here the chrome will be the one cool note in the room. Some people like that contrast, so it is worth deciding before you order. For more layouts, see our guide to styling an Eames lounge chair.

This is an Eames lounge chair with ottoman replica, so both pieces arrive in the same delivery and together weigh 33 kg. In use, plan for a rectangle about 90 cm wide and 160 cm long with the ottoman in front, plus a little space behind the backrest so the chair can turn.

The recline angle is fixed, with no tilt lever or height adjustment.

Caring for white aniline leather and a chrome base

  • Watch out for denim. New dark jeans can leave a blue tint on white aniline leather. Wash new jeans a few times before long sessions in the chair, or lay a throw over the seat for the first weeks.
  • Dust weekly. Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth and run it along the seams, where dust settles first.
  • Act fast on spills. Press a clean, dry cloth onto the spill to lift it. Skip household sprays, baby wipes and melamine sponges, which strip the finish from aniline leather.
  • Condition once or twice a year. Use a product made for aniline leather and try it first on the underside of a cushion, as some conditioners darken pale leather slightly.
  • Mind the sun. Strong daylight through glass can shift white aniline towards a warmer, ivory tone over the years. A spot out of direct midday sun keeps the colour even.
  • Chrome and walnut. Wipe fingerprints off the base with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid scouring pads and bleach-based cleaners. The walnut needs only a soft, dry cloth.

Who this chair is for, and when to pick another

It suits you if you have a light room and want a reading chair that adds warmth to it. It also suits you if you plan to sit for an hour or more with your feet up, and you don’t mind a few minutes of care each week.

Look elsewhere if:

  • you have young children, or pets that climb on furniture. White aniline shows marks and claw scratches, while our chocolate brown and walnut chair hides everyday wear far better.
  • you need a chair for desk work. An upright Eames-style office chair will suit that job better.
  • you want furniture you never have to think about.

Eames lounge chair replica white: buyer questions

Will the white leather turn yellow over time?

It changes slightly, and slowly. Aniline leather has no thick protective coat, so long exposure to strong sunlight can warm the white towards ivory. With normal indoor use, the seat and arms mainly soften and take on a gentle sheen.

Is the base chrome or aluminium?

This version has a polished chrome 5-star base. Chrome gives a cooler, mirror-like shine than the polished aluminium bases on some of our other lounge chairs, and it shows fingerprints a little more. Both types swivel through 360 degrees.

Is the ottoman included?

Yes. The matching ottoman, in the same white leather and walnut veneer, is part of the set. It measures 65 × 54 × 54 cm and weighs 9 kg.

Will the walnut on the chair and ottoman match exactly?

Closely, but not grain for grain. Walnut veneer is real wood, so the figure varies from shell to shell and from one chair to the next. That variation is normal, and it is part of what makes the wood look natural.

Is this an original Eames chair?

No. It is a Sederica replica, a reproduction Eames lounge chair and ottoman inspired by the 1956 design. Sederica is an independent brand with no connection to the Eames Office, Herman Miller or Vitra. Our guide to original vs replica vs reproduction explains the difference.
