Our Eames lounge chair tan leather set pairs tan brown Italian aniline leather with a walnut veneer shell and a black five-star swivel base, and the matching ottoman comes with it. It is a Sederica replica of the lounge chair Charles and Ray Eames introduced in 1956, made to our own specification.
We put this version together for people who want a warm, light brown chair with a darker, calmer base underneath. The tan is lighter than our chocolate and cognac leathers and warmer than camel. That makes this classic tan walnut combo easy to place in most rooms with wooden floors.
Key Features at a Glance
- Tan brown aniline leather: soft from the first sitting, and it darkens gently where you touch it most.
- Walnut veneer on both faces of every shell: the back looks finished, so the chair can stand in the middle of a room.
- 7-layer laminated veneer shells: a layered build that resists cracking and warping through dry, heated winters.
- Shock-mounted shells: a small amount of give as you lean back, so the fixed recline feels relaxed.
- Hand-sewn cushions, welted and piped: clean edges that keep their line around the curves of the shell.
- Black five-star base with 360-degree swivel: turn to the window or the conversation without moving the chair.
- Matching ottoman included: full support for your legs, and you can pull it closer or push it away.
Eames Lounge Chair Tan Leather and Walnut: Why the Black Base Matters
Tan leather and walnut sit close together in colour. On mirror chrome, that warm pair hovers above a bright line of metal. On black, the base steps back. Your eye goes to the leather and the grain, and the chair looks lower and more settled.
That is why this mid-century tan pairing works best in rooms that already have plenty of wood: oak or walnut parquet, herringbone, full bookshelves, a leather or linen sofa. The black also picks up dark details you may already have, such as iron curtain rails, black lamp bases or framed prints.
There is a practical side too. A dark base hides fingerprints and smudges better than polished chrome, and it does not reflect a busy floor. If you want an Eames lounge chair black base under a lighter leather, this is the set in our range that does it.
Leather, Veneer and Base: How Our Set Is Built
Tan brown aniline leather
Aniline leather is dyed all the way through and left without a thick pigment coat. You feel the hide itself, soft and slightly warm, with its natural grain visible. The trade-off is that it changes with use. The arms and headrest slowly darken where hands and hair rest, and the warm light brown gains depth over the years.
Each cushion is hand-sewn, welted and piped. The piping gives every edge a crisp outline. The buttons draw the cushions into the soft, gathered shape you see in our photos.
Walnut veneer shells
The seat, back and ottoman shells are 7-layer laminated veneer, a layered construction that resists cracking and warping. That matters in European homes, where central heating dries the air for half the year.
American walnut veneer covers both faces of each shell, so nothing unfinished shows from behind. Walnut is a natural surface. The figure on your shells will differ from the photos and from every other chair we send out.
Swivel base and shock mounts
The chair turns through 360 degrees on a five-star aluminium base finished in black. The seat and back shells are joined through shock mounts, which flex slightly as you lean back, so the recline never feels rigid. The ottoman stands on its own four-star base, as the photos show.
Where the Black Base Comes From
Charles and Ray Eames presented the lounge chair and ottoman in 1956. The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum records its 1956 chair and ottoman as standing on cast aluminium swivel bases, partly polished and partly matt black. A dark base has been part of the chair’s look from the start. You can read more about the designers on our Charles and Ray Eames page.

Is This Set Right for You?
It is a good fit if:
- You want a tan leather lounge chair for reading, music or long evenings in a living room, study or snug with wooden floors.
- You like brown leather but find chocolate too heavy and cognac too orange.
- You prefer a quieter metal finish to mirror chrome.
- You want leather that shows its age in a good way.
Consider another version if:
- Your room is mostly steel, glass and grey. Our tan brown, walnut and chrome set ties in better there.
- You want a darker, striped shell. Look at tan brown with rosewood.
- The chair will face strong, unshaded sun. Light aniline leather can fade, and chocolate brown is more forgiving.
- You have cats that climb furniture or young children with felt-tip pens. Black leather hides marks far better.
- You need an adjustable recline or headrest. Both are fixed on this design.

Day-to-Day Care
- Leather: dust weekly with a soft, dry cloth and blot spills straight away instead of rubbing. Condition in spring and autumn with a product made for aniline leather, tested first on a hidden spot.
- New denim: unwashed jeans can leave a blue tint on light leather. Lay a throw over the seat for the first few weeks of wear.
- Walnut: wipe with a dry or barely damp microfibre cloth. Skip silicone furniture sprays, and keep the chair about a metre from radiators.
- Black base: wipe with a soft damp cloth, then dry. Avoid abrasive pads and strong cleaners, and check the fixing bolts once or twice a year.
Questions About This Tan Leather Set
Should I choose the black base or the chrome base with tan leather?
Choose black if your room is warm and full of wood and you want the leather and walnut to lead. Choose chrome if the room has steel, glass or grey and you want a brighter, more modern edge. We list the same leather and shell materials on both sets. The base and its upkeep are the difference, since chrome shows fingerprints more readily.
Is the tan leather real leather or PU?
Real leather. The cushions and armrest pads are covered in Italian aniline leather, not PU or bonded leather. Because aniline has no heavy surface coating, it feels softer than most coated leathers and develops a patina with use.
Will dark jeans mark tan leather?
They can. Indigo dye from new or unwashed denim can rub onto light leather, mostly on the front of the seat and the armrests. Wash new jeans a few times first, or use a throw for the first weeks. If a blue tint appears, clean it early with an aniline leather cleaner.
How heavy is the set, and can one person move it?
The chair weighs 24 kg and the ottoman 9 kg. One person can swivel the chair or slide it across a room, but we recommend two people for stairs or lifting. Lift by the seat shell and base, never by the armrests or headrest.
Is this the same tan leather as on your rosewood sets?
Yes. We list the same tan brown Italian aniline leather on all our tan lounge chair sets. The shell and base are what change: walnut has a calmer, even grain, rosewood a darker striped one, and the base comes in black or chrome. Screens show colour differently, so email hello@sederica.com if you want help matching it to a sofa or rug.
