Barcelona Chair Repair: How to Fix Straps, Cushions and Leather (Repair or Replace?)

TL;DR

  • Most Barcelona chair repair jobs come down to three faults: stretched or torn straps, flattened cushions and worn leather.
  • You can replace straps at home in about two hours. Leather repairs and new cushions need a specialist.
  • A full set of 17 Barcelona chair replacement straps costs about £185, and one made-to-measure 60 x 60 cm leather cushion £216 to £252 (UK supplier price lists, October 2026).
  • Check your warranty first. A fault inside the warranty period should cost you nothing.
  • Our rule of thumb: if the repair quote passes half the price of a comparable new chair, replace it.

What goes wrong on a Barcelona chair, and can you repair it at home?

Barcelona chair repair usually means fixing one of three faults: straps that have stretched or torn, cushions that have gone flat, or leather that is scuffed or cracked. You can replace straps at home. Colour repairs, tears and reupholstery need a specialist. When the straps and both cushions have failed on a replica, a new chair often costs less.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich designed the Barcelona chair in 1929 as two loose cushions resting on straps across a steel X-frame. The straps carry your full weight, so they wear out first.

The licensed chair made by Knoll uses 17 leather straps fixed with aluminium rivets (MoMA Design Store, 2026). Replicas vary, so count the straps on your own chair before you order.

Check your warranty before you pay for any Barcelona chair repair

A fault that appears inside the warranty period is the seller’s job to put right, so check your paperwork before you buy parts. Every Sederica Barcelona chair replica has a 2-year written warranty against faults in materials and workmanship. Email us photos and your order number before you try a fix yourself.

Report a torn or loose strap, a pulled button or a cracked weld. Stains and fading are care issues, and our guide on how to clean a Barcelona chair covers those.

Bought elsewhere? In the UK, a fault found in the first six months is presumed to have been there at delivery (Which?, 2025). In the EU, new goods carry a legal guarantee of at least two years (Your Europe, 2026).

Sederica does not sell spare parts. Once a chair is out of warranty, straps and cushions come from independent leather workshops and upholsterers.

How to restrap a Barcelona chair: replacement straps in 5 steps

Replacing Barcelona chair straps is a home job if your straps are riveted and you can use a drill. One UK riveting kit supplier says a whole chair takes about two hours (UK strap supplier, 2026).

You need:

  • Barcelona chair leather straps in cowhide about 3 to 3.5 mm thick, cut to length and pre-punched.
  • A riveting kit: a rivet gun, 4 mm rivets and a 4 mm drill bit.
  • Pliers, a dressmaker’s tape, a household drill and eye protection.

Step 1: Take the cushions off and count the straps

Lift or unclip both cushions. Count the straps on the seat and on the back, then press each one. A good strap feels firm and a stretched one bows. If several bow, replace the full set.

Step 2: Measure rivet to rivet

Put the end of the tape on the rivets at one end of a strap. Wrap it around the strap, pull it taut and read off the length at the far rivets. One UK supplier cuts them from 63 to 72 cm (UK strap supplier, 2026).

Barcelona chair repair made clear: fix stretched straps, flat cushions and worn leather, check UK costs, and see when a new chair costs less than the repair.

Measure a seat strap and a back strap separately, because lengths often differ. Check the width too. One replica maker uses 38 mm (US replica parts seller, 2026).

Order the straps now, and leave the old ones on until the new set arrives.

Step 3: Remove the old strap

Cut the old strap away so the rivets stand clear of the frame, then pull them out with pliers. Drill out any rivet that snaps with the 4 mm bit. Drill the rivet only, never the frame.

Step 4: Rivet the new strap on

Rivet one end, wrap the strap around the frame, pull it taut and rivet the second end. Leather stretches with use, so a new strap should feel tight on day one.

Step 5: Refit the cushions and test

Clip the cushions back on and sit down gently. Check each rivet, then again after two weeks of use.

If the repair does not work

If a rivet will not grip, the hole is worn or the rivet is the wrong size. If the seat still sags with new straps, the foam has collapsed and the next job is Barcelona chair cushion replacement.

Barcelona chair replacement cushions, cushion covers and reupholstery

You can replace Barcelona chair cushions and keep the frame. UK workshops make them to measure, as a leather cover over a foam inner, with a wait of two to four weeks (UK cushion maker, 2026). Ready-made Barcelona chair cushion covers are rare, because cushion sizes differ between makers.

Full reupholstery is skilled work. The licensed chair uses 40 separate leather squares, welted and button-tufted by hand (Knoll, 2026). UK upholsterers charge £30 to £60 an hour (MyBuilder, 2026). Loose Barcelona chair covers hide wear, but they do not fix a sagging seat.

Check what your cushions are made of before you ask for a quote. On our black Barcelona chair, the seating faces are Italian leather and the cushion sides are matching faux leather. Leather can be recoloured. Faux leather does not absorb conditioner, and once its coating peels the lasting fix is a new panel.

A colour repair is matched from the leather itself, not from a photo. For a scuff on a dark brown leather Barcelona chair, ask the technician to take the shade from a hidden spot under a cushion. An ottoman has its own straps and cushion, so check both pieces on a set such as the white Barcelona chair and ottoman.

Barcelona chair repair or replace: what does each cost in the UK?

Repair costs less when one part has failed. Replacement costs less when several have. Add up your quotes, then compare the total with the price of a like-for-like new chair.

A full strap set, a riveting kit and two new cushions come to roughly £640 to £715 before delivery. That is more than a new single replica: ours cost €409 to €445 (Sederica, October 2026).

Our rule of thumb: if the repair quote passes half the price of a comparable new chair, replace it. A licensed chair costs several thousand pounds new, so it is almost always worth repairing. A replica with one torn strap just needs a £12 strap.

Made-to-measure parts take two to four weeks. A new Barcelona chair replica UK order arrives in 4 to 7 working days and starts a new 2-year warranty. See our Barcelona single seater range, or a Barcelona chair set such as the black Barcelona chair and ottoman if the ottoman is worn as well.

Common Barcelona chair repair mistakes to avoid

Most failed repairs come from four avoidable mistakes.

  • Patching a torn strap. Tape and staples do not hold body weight. Replace the strap.
  • Ordering by guesswork. Straps made for a licensed chair may not fit a replica, and the suppliers we checked refuse returns on cut straps. Measure your own chair.
  • Drilling the frame. New holes weaken the steel and spoil the finish. Drill out old rivets only.
  • Repairing first and claiming later. A home repair makes a warranty claim harder to assess. Report the fault before you touch it.

Frequently asked questions about Barcelona chair repair

Can you replace Barcelona chair straps?

Yes. Barcelona chair leather strap replacement is the most common repair. You remove the old rivets and fix new made-to-measure straps with a rivet gun. A confident DIYer can restrap a full chair in about two hours.

How many straps does a Barcelona chair have?

The licensed chair has 17 leather straps (MoMA Design Store, 2026), sold in the UK as nine seat straps and eight back straps. Replicas differ, so count your own before you order.

Can Barcelona chair cushions be reupholstered?

Yes. An upholsterer can reupholster Barcelona chair cushions or remake them to measure. It is slow work, so ask for a quote first. On a replica, two new leather cushions can cost more than a new chair.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a Barcelona chair?

Repair is cheaper for a single fault, such as a scuff at £20 to £100 (MyBuilder, 2026) or one strap at about £12. Replacement is cheaper when a replica needs new straps and both cushions, at roughly £640 to £715 in parts.

Is there a Barcelona chair repair kit?

There is no all-in-one Barcelona chair repair kit. The closest is a riveting kit (rivet gun, rivets and drill bit) for about £24 (UK strap supplier, October 2026). Straps are sold separately, cut to your measurements.

Can you buy Barcelona chair parts on their own?

Yes, from independent workshops. You can order Barcelona chair cushions only, or Barcelona chair replacement cushions and straps together, made to measure. A Barcelona chair frame only is harder to find. Sederica does not sell Barcelona chair parts separately.
