TL;DR
- Barcelona chair materials come down to three parts: a polished steel X-frame, two leather-covered foam cushions and a set of leather support straps.
- Licensed chairs have been made in both stainless steel and chrome-plated steel, so neither metal is the only correct one (MoMA, 2026; V&A, 2026).
- Copies differ most in frame metal, leather coverage, foam and strap fixings.
- Matt and glossy frames are equally strong; matt hides fingerprints better.
What Is a Barcelona Chair Made Of?
The main Barcelona chair materials are a polished steel X-frame, a seat cushion and back cushion made of leather over foam, and leather straps stretched across the frame to carry those cushions. The frame is stainless steel or chrome-plated steel. What changes from one chair to the next is the quality of each layer.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich designed the chair for the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona Exposition (Wikipedia, 2026). The history of the 1929 Pavilion chair covers how it was first built. This guide helps you judge any listing part by part.
Barcelona chair materials at a glance

| Part | Good build | What to check in a listing |
|---|---|---|
| Frame | Stainless or chrome-plated steel, one piece | The metal named, plus “one-piece” |
| Finish | Mirror polish (glossy) or brushed or coated (matt) | Finish named |
| Filling | High-resilience foam, often with a fibre top layer | Foam density in kg/m³ |
| Cover | Leather panels, buttoned and sewn | Which surfaces are real leather |
| Piping (welting) | Leather seams round each panel | Even piping, straight button rows |
| Straps | Thick belting leather | Strap count and fixings |
Is the Barcelona Chair Frame Stainless Steel or Chrome?
It can be either. Knoll, the licensed maker, lists its current chair as steel with a hand-buffed polished chrome finish or a matt black “onyx” finish (Knoll, 2026). Yet MoMA catalogues its 1953 Knoll chair as stainless steel bars (MoMA, 2026), and a 1968 Knoll chair at the V&A is chromium-plated steel (V&A, 2026).
So “stainless steel” in a listing is not automatically closer to the licensed chair. Stainless steel has chromium mixed all the way through, while chrome-plated steel is plain steel with a thin chrome skin. Think of a solid chocolate bar next to a chocolate-coated biscuit: scratch the bar and you find more chocolate, but chip the coating and the biscuit shows. On a chair, that biscuit is steel that can rust where thin plating breaks.
One-piece or bolted?
The 1929 frame was bolted together. In 1950 it was remade in stainless steel as one continuous piece (Wikipedia, 2026). Check the point where the two curved bars cross. It should be smooth, with no bolt heads or rough weld lines.
The magnet test: a hint, not proof
Plain steel grabs a fridge magnet hard. Grade 304 stainless barely pulls, though bending can make it slightly magnetic and some stainless grades are fully magnetic (ASSDA, 2023). A strong pull is your cue to ask more questions.
Which Barcelona Chair Is Better: Matt Finish or Glossy?

Neither finish is stronger. Glossy (mirror-polished) steel is the classic Pavilion look, but it shows fingerprints and fine scratches. Matt, meaning brushed steel or a dark coating, hides everyday marks. Knoll offers both, and pairs its matt black frame with black straps only (Knoll, 2026).
| Finish | Marks and scratches | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mirror-polished (glossy) | Show easily in strong light | Bright living rooms, the traditional look |
| Brushed steel (matt) | Mostly hidden in the grain | Busy homes and offices |
| Black coated (matt) | Hidden, but chips show bare metal | Dark interiors and black leather |
Leather has a finish too: aniline leather has a natural low sheen, while pigmented leather has an even coloured top coat. Our Barcelona chair leather guide explains each grade.
What Are Barcelona Chair Cushions Made Of?
Each cushion is a block of foam wrapped in sewn leather panels and held down with leather-covered buttons. Knoll uses high-resilience urethane foam topped with polyester fibre, under 40 hand-welted panels (Knoll, 2026).
Density is how much one cubic metre of foam weighs, written as kg/m³. Heavier foam usually lasts longer, and high-resilience (HR) foam springs back quickly. “High-density foam” without a number tells you little, so ask for the figure.
Where is the real leather?
Many replicas, ours included, use real leather on the seating faces and faux leather on the sides. That is fine at replica prices, if the listing says so. “Italian leather” alone does not say which surfaces it covers.
Panel count is not a quality test. Knoll lists 40 panels, while one UK dealer lists 72 for the same licensed chair (Viaduct, 2026). Check for straight button rows and even piping instead.
Fire safety labels for UK buyers
In the UK, foam fillings in domestic upholstered furniture must pass set ignition tests, and most items need a permanent label (Business Companion, 2025). In the EU, ask which tests the cushions passed, such as EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2.
What Holds the Cushions Up? Barcelona Chair Straps Explained

Leather straps hold the cushions up, running across the frame like a hammock. The 1968 Knoll chair at the V&A has nine straps under the seat and eight behind the back, fixed with steel pins (V&A, 2026). Knoll uses cowhide belting leather with edges dyed to match (Knoll, 2026).
Check four things in any listing:
- Count the straps, because fewer straps means each carries more load.
- Feel the thickness, since belting leather should be as stiff as a good belt.
- Look for edges finished on both sides, often called “double-finished”, which resist fraying.
- Check for rivets or pins through each strap, plus studs that stop the cushions sliding.
Where Are Barcelona Chairs Made?
The original Barcelona chair was made in Germany. A 1930 example at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston was made by the Berlin firm Berliner Metallgewerbe Josef Müller (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 2026).
Today the licensed chair is made in the USA and Italy. A UK Knoll dealer lists it as made in Italy (Utility Design, 2026), while a US dealer lists the same model as made in the USA (Hive Modern, 2026). On replica listings, “Italian leather” describes the hide, not the factory, so ask where the frame and cushions were made.
Common Mistakes When Comparing Barcelona Chair Materials
The most common mistake is trusting one word. “Stainless steel” says nothing about frame joints, and “genuine leather” hides the real-and-faux split. Top-down photos hide the straps, so ask for an underside shot. For a full checklist, see what to check before buying a replica.
Which build suits you?
| You are | Look for |
|---|---|
| A family with children or pets | Darker leather and a brushed or polished stainless frame |
| Furnishing an office reception | Dense foam, thick straps and a written warranty |
| Buying a reading chair | HR foam with a fibre layer, plus a footstool |
| Styling a bright, minimal room | A mirror-polished frame with white or cream leather |
What Sederica’s Barcelona Replicas Are Made Of
Sederica’s Barcelona replicas use a one-piece, mirror-polished stainless steel X-frame, Italian leather on the seating faces with matching faux leather on the sides, fire-retardant high-resilience foam, and support straps double-riveted to the frame, with a 2-year written warranty (Sederica product pages, 2026). They are replicas of the Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich design, not Knoll products.
The build is the same across colours, so choose by room. A black leather barcelona chair suits offices, a white barcelona chair replica brightens a minimal space, and the dark brown leather barcelona chair or barcelona chair tan leather finish warms a room.
Want just the chair? Start with a barcelona single seater. For longer reading sessions, a barcelona chair ottoman replica set adds the footstool.
